ABOUT OUR FIRM
On May 1, 1975, Leonard Decof
founded his firm under the name of Leonard Decof,
Ltd. It was the first and only law firm in Rhode
Island dedicated exclusively to litigation and
trial of plaintiffs' cases. In the beginning,
Leonard Decof was its sole member. A graduate
of Yale University and Harvard Law School, he
had decided to make trial advocacy his life's
work. His credo was professionalism, excellence
and integrity. This philosophy has marked the
work of the firm, which has evolved to the current
Decof & Decof. We are dedicated to
protecting the rights of injured Rhode Islanders
suffering from:
- Medical malpractice:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Shoulder Dystocia
- Failure to diagnose cancer
- Anesthesia errors
- Hospital mistakes
- Brachial plexus palsy
and all other related birth injuries resulting
from medical malpractice.
- Personal injury:
- Wrongful death
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Auto/bus/motorcycle and
trucking accidents
- Unsafe machinery
- Defective products
- Severe burns
- SUV rollover
- Automotive crashworthiness
and other serious injuries.
- Legal malpractice
- Aviation disasters
- Commercial litigation
- Professional sports litigation
- Civil rights
Mark B. Decof, Leonard's
son, has established his own place and reputation
in the legal community. An experienced, thorough
and compassionate litigator, Mark Decof has tried
to verdict many important cases, obtaining numerous
verdicts in excess of a million dollars. He is
recognized as one of the foremost plaintiffs'
trial attorneys in Rhode Island, especially in
the fields of medical malpractice and product
liability.
HOW DO WE SET OURSELVES APART?
All of the firm's lawyers, particularly
senior associates John S. Foley and Vincent
T. Cannon are skilled litigators. The firm's
mission is to offer to its clients the best representation
possible. It is acutely aware of and responsive
to its clients' needs. It pursues this mission
conscientiously and diligently.
The firm has an abiding concern
in cases affecting the public welfare and the
public's rights. In 1992, at the request of the
Governor of the State of Rhode Island, it undertook
to represent the State to recover losses, in the
hundreds of millions of dollars, suffered by taxpayers
resulting from the State's banking crisis, the
greatest financial disaster in the State's history.
In pursuit of these claims, the firm filed actions
against hundreds of defendants. These actions
were litigated in the State and Federal trial
appellate courts, and in the United States Supreme
Court.
In addition to plaintiffs' tort
cases, the firm handles select cases in the areas
of civil rights, antitrust and professional sports
litigation.
